Chain of Command

Due to prep for the upcoming baby, my time allotted for painting has been fairly small. But the thought of the potential changes to the pecking order around the house gave way to a slightly darker tone on this quick procedural drawing. I have been focusing more on my color palette over the last few paintings, to really trim it down to just a few colors that will represent the mood.

After I finished the piece, I remembered that Procreate has a built-in feature to allow you to export the video. I like this much better than the function of some other apps, like SketchbookPro and Sketchclub, where you actively need to 'turn on' the recording, but the quality of the capture is a little lacking...

Good Things Come in Small Packages Nomad Contest

The team at Nomad Brush was kind enough to ask me to test-drive their new Mini 2 retractable brush, and make a piece of art for their new themed content. Though the competition is pretty stiff, I think I have a chance at this! If you like my illustration, 'Small Wonder', please vote for me here.

Mobile Art Presentation at TekServe in NYC Nov 11

Last night at TekServe in NYC, I assisted David Scott Leibowitz in a presentation about creating art on mobile devices, in support of his book on the same topic that collects the work and working methods of dozens of mobile artists from around the globe. I drew, mashed, and 3d sculpted on my iPad during the presentations using a variety of different apps. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the artwork or apps that I showed during the presentation. David's website can be found in the link below:

Ellie's Rescue painted on an iPad using Procreate

Glaze is allowing me to experiment directly with extruded paint effects, though the effect
is a bit on the heavy side

'Pitstop' made with Sketch Time App on an iPad

While doing a search for Sketch apps the other day, I stumbled onto this app called Sketch Time, http://sketchtimeapp.com/ which turns out to be fairly brilliant in how much it's boiled down sketching to a small but powerful toolset. The app is very fast using your finger (I have not tried with a stylus or brush yet) and the UI allows for fast navigation through various pen or marker sizes...though in my opinion, it favors those who have used real-world markers for a long time, or been trained to use thes in art or design school. There are no controls for the opacity on the markers, but the bleed on the markers is fairly realistic.  The app also allows playback, though I cannot see how to export these files. I made my own cheat with AirServer and a screen recording app on my PowerBook.
